Indian TV Fills Info Gap
WSJ writes:
On Tuesday evening in India, eight bombs exploded on local trains at the height of evening rush hour, killing more than 200 people and injuring hundreds more. Almost immediately, more than a half-dozen news channels -- including national channels like New Delhi Television Ltd. or NDTV, Star News, and CNN's India venture, CNN IBN -- started offering scrolling "tickers" across their screens in which viewers could post brief messages.

Previously, when a disaster would strike, the lack of information would be "a time of big frustration for the ordinary citizen," said Uday Shankar, chief executive of Star News. The scrolling tickers tap directly into one of the realities of life in India, which is that when a person is injured away from friends or the home, it can be very difficult, if not impossible, to get even basic information about whether a person was taken to a hospital, and if so, which one.
