Well, who needs the whole internet? I mean much of the sites that I visit are dynamic sites (needs valid session), and webaroo seems like solving a problem which doesnt exist at all. Moreover, if I have Google desktop search (which indexes the websites that I visit), I dont need this s/w!! The window of opportunity Webaroo is trying to exploit is pretty narrow. In a couple years, if not sooner, there will be blanket wireless internet connectivity available for entire cities. Who would need offline content then? Besides, with more and more content creation happening at the edges, the total content on the web is growing at a high rate. Maybe storing Wikipedia is a good idea, but I agree with the previous commenter, with a lot of web being dynamic in nature the point of storing it is moot. Posted by Anand Jain

And maybe free? Most of the successful viral online service has been completely free and has given away lot of freebies (lke Google's POP3/2 GB space, Flickr's 2 GB space etc.) Basically these cos identified the most *unthinkable* service/feature that can be made free - something which will make the end user say 'WoW'!! And thats one of the main reason why these services tipped. People were amazed to see so much free stuff and then they shared all this with their friends..and so on - which ultimately resulted in viral adoption. Ashish
TECH TALK: City Wi-Fi Networks: Taipei's Lead
Even as US cities consider and start rolling out Wi-Fi networks, one Asian city that has already started doing it is Taipei. The Wall Street Journal (January 19) wrote: “The network, initiated by the Taipei city government and built by a private company, already includes more than 3,300 wireless "access points" that cover half the city's 106 square miles. The devices use the wireless Internet technology known as Wi-Fi to let Taipei's 2.6 million residents surf the Internet or send emails from the privacy of their living rooms or the public comfort of their favorite park benches. Although the project has encountered some glitches and delays, city officials say that when it is completed around midyear, it will cover more than 90% of Taipei.” The Taipei network is not cheap. The WSJ article adds: “In August 2004, the government approved Q-ware Systems Inc., which beat out another local company in bidding. Construction started the following month. Q-ware, in turn, hired Nortel Networks Corp. of Brampton, Ontario to build, equip, and maintain the system...Q-ware says it is investing about $93 million to build the network.” An article in Forbes in 2005 provided some additional information:
Additional details of Taipei's network are available here. The network, dubbed WIFLY, costs NT399 (Rs 550, $12) per month. In many Asian cities, Wi-Fi co-exists with multiple other solutions. But in countries like India, it can become the primary form of access. With the government in India reluctant to open up the last mile access of the telcos to competition, wireless mesh networks using unlicenced spectrum are what the country needs. Dear rajesh, Hi. The blog about city wi-fi network is erroneous in a lot o ways because, right now wi-fi is only a load of Hype and little perormance. I run a Wireless networking company myself and believe me RF links are the only access media that perform well, when designed and executed well. But one thing that i would like to say is that technology cannot be bad only technologists are bad. Big companies are usually run with one leader's vision. The decisions made by the top leader get implemented immediately and all other executives are focussed on execution(on various fronts) and making several intiatives perfect. Any new idea to fundamentally innovate dont happen inside but happen through acquisitions. The start-ups who have a lot of confidence dont sell their idea but make it big themselves. Looks like long term focussed start-ups dont sell and they find super sherpas like Ram Sriram and Eric Schmidt instead.
It even makes sense to isolate technology and execution leaderships. Or how about a new kind of special outsourcing relationship between the two ?. If Bose audio collaborates with Tata or Reliance like player(total market expertise) can they bring high quality entertainment systems to BOP ?. CK Prahalad's observation that BOP market is built and not entered into is enlightening.
