BangaloreIT.com Presentation
I gave a presentation (MS Powerpoint format, 198 KB; PDF format, 202 KB) on Affordable Computing, as part of the "IT and Common Man" session on the first day of BangaloreIT.com. Much of my talk centred around what I have been writing in my Tech Talk series on SMEs and Technology. Priya Ganapati (Rediff) has a review of the first day, suggesting that "the sessions were so boring and unfocussed that it is unlikely any decision maker listening to it would have been convinced to try it out." I couldn't stay for all the talks, but I did very much like the presentation given by Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala. He spoke about the innovation factory that he has engineered, and how some of the group companies incubated out of the Telecom and Computer Networking department at IIT-Madras are helping in making his dream of doubling India's rural GDP from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 over the next decade. I think the organisers should have had greater interactivity in the sessions. Q&A was not allowed, which I think is a very short-sighted decision. In fact, they should have restricted speakers to about 20 minutes, and had a 10 minute Q&A. The audience must interact with the speakers, and not just in the breaks. I'd go to the extent of saying that all presentations must be made available a couple days before the event on the website so that interested people can go through them, and come prepared with questions or even submit their queries and comments before hand. In this two-way world, to have only a one-way broadcast is just not done. After all, the aim is to generate ideas and discussion - this cannot be done without audience participation.
Technology Investing
Two differing viewpoints on technology and its future. NYTimes is of the view that "investment in technology is roaring softly back" after more than 3 years while WSJ feels (from a stock market viewpoint) "tech's reign may wane as the US economy stabilises." Writes NYT:
What are the drivers of this increase in technology spending? Adds NYT:
The WSJ view: "There's no denying the clear leader in the stock market since the start of the rally that began in March: technology. These glitterati of the bubble era triumphantly bounced back from their despised state to rule the stock market anew (though they still remain well below their peak). But some market strategists are warning the shine is about to come off." My view: I don't know much about stocks, but as a sector, investments in technology by businesses are going to continue, fuelled in part by the small- and medium-sized enterprises. Even though the views are more US-centric, I think the opportunity for providing tech-enabled solutions to increase productivity of SMEs in emerging markets is very significant.

I don't know as much as I pretend to either. Equities aren't really my area. Buuut: the jury is still out on just how 'sustained' the US recovery is going to be, we can only watch and wait. But some people are saying the whole equity market looks very pricey if you look at the jobs dynamic. Buuuuuuuuut no2: as you well know, having good technology and making money from it are very different things. There is a *big* question mark over the profitability of IT investments given the turbulence associated with the whole sector. This is the new economy dynamic. But then again, if tech doesn't hold for the US it's a question of 'sauve qui peut' for the rest. Posted by EdwardThe P/E ratio for tech companies is still astronomically high. This equity bubble will burst very soon, just after the tex-cut jolt wears off. Posted by Prince CharlesPeter Drucker pointed out that the first typeset printing technologists had about a 20 year reign of popularity and wealth. However, their technology quickly became commonplace as competition emerged and they fell into obscurity. The real long-term winners were the companies that were formed to take advantage of the technology in other business situations. I've just put a link to this at IEW.
I'm increasingly skeptical about the loss of time involved in visiting such 'parties'. Anyone who wants to know what you are saying can read it on this page. Of course they're awfully good for 'politiking', but maybe that's just the problem.
