Newspapers Disrupted 2

Following my earlier post comes this from VentureBlog summarising the problems that newspapers face: "Ebay started the assault on newspapers by chipping away at one of the primary revenue streams -- classified ads. Then blogs made it very easy for anyone to publish regular daily content. Now with cell phones turning everyone into photographers, it continues to be rough times for newspaper publishers."

Blogs as Portals?

Arnold Kling makes a point that bloggers would do well to remember: "People who have longstanding weblogs who want to keep their following will find that they have to behave like portals. That is, they will have to become very rich in links, and reduce their self-expression (or express themselves by the way in which they select links)...If you want to express yourself heavily (as I do), and you want a large following, then I think you will have to progressively narrow your scope. People will come to you for your area of expertise, not for stuff that they can find just as easily elsewhere."

I think the popular blogs will have three key elements:
- personality: a reflection of the blogger's mind
- links and/or comments: the blogger works as a filter on the information out there, and embellishes the linked stories with a unique perspective
- focus: the blogger should concentrate on one/few topics, and eschew everything else

BlogStreet | PermaLink | Comments (48)

Rajesh, Following kinds of blogs would not survive:
a) Personal Blogs - They are reward-expctation based blogs: Blogger's enthusiasm is fueled by expected comments. In the long run, however, the small fan following wouldn't stick with the same personal blogs! (unless the blogger is a celeb)

b) Feeder Blogs - Blogs that link to other news /stories without much to say of their own. You can also call such blogs recycling blogs. They are headed for doom, again unless they from some reputed agency (e.g. O'Reilly etc). People don't need yet another place to spoon-feed them about whats happening around on the Net. Today net users are sophisticated and know where to find the info of 'their interest'!

What will survive are the blogs that add value (no jargon) to the reader. For example, a professor in Harvard might be talking about copyright issue and thats what will remain there. Rest of 'em blogs will just vanish in the obscurity of the Net just like the millions of never-updated-anymore geocities homepages!

I disagree with the previous comments. My detailed views can be found here

Well Divya, all I can say in my support is this:

Lemme invite you to watch what I said would happen, actually happen over the years.

Popcorns?

Posted by AJ

AJ, although I would very much want to agree with you, yet I'll disagree. Because sometimes,

1. The "reward" for personal blogs will be something as simple as writing down your thoughts, and reading other's thoughts. There are *hugely* personal blogs without no comments(ah, the double-negative!) for example www.bwg.com

2. Feeder blogs will still continue to exist simply because the average net user does not have the time, the know-how or the energy to use newsreaders or visit multiple sites to be bombarded with thousands of news articles. The feeder sites are successes because they read the pulse of what their readers want, and weave such newsitems into their posts. And I'm using a *very* liberal interpretation of "much" in your phrase, "do not have much to say"

Posted by Jivha

Jivha, exceptions are there in any field! But I was not talking about exceptions. I was talking about the blog hype - the everyday bloggers who blog just because everyone else is doing it. The fad, the vogue, the trend. Thats what's gonna go away is what I am saying!

Filipinos love a free ride. Well, who would want to pay for something one can get for free, right? But there are some very strange people sending me e-mails lately. Two were pleas for advice on marriage annulment. One was for a logo of the Koalisyon ng Nagkaisang Pilipino (KNP), of which Fernando Poe Jr. is the standard-bearer.

I was nice to the women asking for advice on marriage annulment. But, please, no more. Just because a lawyer blogs about her opinions doesn't mean she is offering legal advice for free. Enough.

To the person asking for a logo of the KNP... does it look like I am supporting KNP? Hello? Read my posts before making such a ridiculous request.

Microsoft's Success Secrets

Michael Gartenberg of Jupiter has started a series taking a look at "some of the reasons for Microsoft’s success in the marketplace and how those areas of success might lead to positive growth in other places." The first post looks at positive feedback loops:

In information technology success begets more success and Microsoft has shown the ability to use positive feedback loops to its benefit far more than any other company. The result is that Microsoft benefits from the image of being the “safe choice” in so many market sectors and that leads to further growth which has helped it in two critical markets.

Client operating systems is the classic example of this. User adoption of Windows has led to a nearly total support of hardware OEMs for Windows. Nearly all new PCs today ship with a pre-installed version of the operating system ( or enhanced new client versions like Tablet PC and Media Center). Support by users and OEMs has lead to greater independent software vendor support for Windows. Nearly all software for PC desktops is made available exclusively or first for Windows. The availability of this software further increases the rate of user adoption and OEM support, which in turn solidifies Windows position with ISVs.

Similarly, with Microsoft Office, users have adopted the software and trained their personnel in using it. Millions of files have been created using the Office file formats. The existence of the files and trained users create more demand for Office software. Of course, the demand for Office software leads to more trained users and more Office files.

Many organizations feel they need to use Windows and Office due to market momentum making it very hard for anything new to break into this market.

There’s nothing on the horizon that is likely to change this scenario, which is the reason that the Office and Windows Client groups account for the most positive revenue streams of Microsoft’s seven business units. It’s also likely that the tighter integration between the Office, Windows and the different Windows server products will help boost the overall growth of the Windows Server family over the next several years. Integration will also be a key defense against Linux, creating a non-substitutable infrastructure that will ultimately be difficult for IT departments to migrate away from.

One way to take on Microsoft is to begin with today's non-users - in the world's emerging markets. Here, the first battle to fight is on the server - which is Linux's strength. By going beyond what a basic Linux server offers and integrating business applications like accounting and CRM, it is possible to create a package which goes well beyond Microsoft's own server product. Then, one should use that server base as the way to target the desktops.

Guerrilla Guide to Interviewing

This is a 3-year-old post by Joel Spolsky, but one worth reading and implementing because "interviewing is more of an art than a science":

Here's a typical plan for interviewing a programmer:

1. Introduction
2. Question about recent project candidate worked on
3. Impossible Question
4. C Function
5. Are you satisfied?
6. Design Question
7. The Challenge
8. Do you have any questions?

In a nutshell, hire people who are "Smart, and Gets Things Done."

Linux and Microsoft in Brazil

WSJ writes that "President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is finalizing a policy recommending that federal ministries, agencies and state enterprises install open-source software, such as Linux, instead of proprietary software, such as Microsoft's Windows, in new computer equipment. Sergio Amadeu, Mr. da Silva's information-technology adviser, says the goal is for at least 80% of government computers bought next year to feature open-source software, though the guidelines aren't binding." This could tilt the scales against Microsoft.

Ninad Mehta summarises the challenges Microsoft faces in the emerging markets nicely: "(1) Protecting against software piracy and (2) Preserving Microsoft's market share against Linux."

Low-power, Low-speed Networks

AP writes:

The idea is to build motes - tiny computers that broadcast a radio signal - that are cheap enough to deploy everywhere but just smart enough to "self-organize" into powerful networks that can sense and convey information like whether milk is spoiled or a bookshelf overloaded.

Dozens of companies are working on it, but there could be an increase by the end of the year with the adoption of a standard called Zigbee, being negotiated by a consortium of companies that includes Ember and bigger players like Honeywell, Motorola, Philips and Samsung. The standard gets its name from an idea engineers are hoping to emulate: the zigging and zagging of bees, which are individually simple organisms that work together to tackle complex tasks.

On Zigbee, data crawls along as slow as 20 kilobits per second, about one-fiftieth the speed of Bluetooth. And the 802.11 family of wireless standards, better known as Wi-Fi, can be many times faster than Bluetooth.

But slow and steady has its virtues. With more complex networks, each "node" on the network has to be within range of a wired, expensive hub. With "mesh" networks like Ember, both the messages and the components are simple enough that each node can act as a relay station. In theory, the price would allow each node to be placed within broadcast range (about 100 feet) of another. A message could simply jump from lamp post to lamp post, all the way to headquarters, with no need for expensive hubs or wires.

Diet pillsDiet supplement TECH TALK: The Next Billion: Four Key Ideas

If we are to get to the next billion users, the challenge before us is as follows: create a computing solution at a significantly lower price point, which is also more easily manageable. At the same time, it should be able to support much of the applications base that has already been developed, even as it needs to encourage new applications development for the next set of users. The need is for a whole solution, not an assembly of parts. The need is for a “disruptive innovation” in the PC industry.

There are four key ideas to bring about this revolution:

Server-centric computing: The benefit of having fast, reliable networks is that it does not matter where the storage and processing is happening. So, why not centralise it? Leverage Moore’s Law on the server. The server can be on the enterprise network (in the case of the SME) or on the operator network (in the case of the home users). In both cases, the networks are either LANs or extended LANs with connectivity from 10-100 Mbps. Once we assume that this connectivity is going to be there, it becomes easy to think of centralizing processing and storage on servers.

USD 100 “virtual PCs”: Server-centric computing now simplifies the clients dramatically – all they need to be are graphical “terminals” which connect to the servers, and are maintenance-free and upgrade-free, for life. It should be possible to get the cost of these terminals to between USD 100-150. The actual computer needs to be no more than USD 50 (a “thin client”) – all that is needed is a processor, which can run a software like “vnc” (virtual network computing) that drives the local interfaces. The five connectors that need to be available are for keyboard, mouse, display, LAN and power. The biggest cost will be the display. Refurbished monitors will cost USD 50 while new ones will cost USD 100.

Open-source software: The underlying software needs to be based on Linux, with other open-source software used for the various applications. Linux is more than good enough, and there are thousands of applications available. Emerging markets need to shift from Microsoft Windows and Office – even though the software today may be theoretically “cheap” because it can be pirated, these markets are damaging their own long-term futures by reliance on robbery rather than legal alternatives. Piracy stunts the growth of their own domestic software industry.

Remote support: Once the endpoints (desktops) are simplified, support only needs to be provided at two levels: to end-users for applications, and for the server. Both of these can be offered remotely – in very much the same way companies in India are offering outsourced support to global organisations. This gets around the problem of cost-effectively supporting smaller technology set-ups – which will be the case in the events of homes and SMEs.

Rajesh--End points under 100USD is possible and you have really done a great job. What i am concerned is Connectivity!!

Connectivity is costlier than computing in emerging countries as of now-more so when you are talking about broadband or wide area connectivity.

For rural homes with 100usd PCs with thin clients-you do need absolutely high bandwidth connection.

Wifi Access points though undeer 50usd in USA are still around more than 120USD in india and so are prices of PCMCIA cards.

We need to really address low cost broadband connectivity for rural areas under USO rules for major mega pwireline and wireless operators in India.

Thanks

Anish
