Mozilla Roadmap
O'Reilly Network writes:
The biggest news in the roadmap update is that mozilla.org intends to stop development of the application suite it currently produces in favor of stand-alone applications. When Netscape created the Mozilla open source community, it released the code for its Communicator browser suite, which included a web browser, a mail and news client, an HTML editor, and an address book. Over the past five years the community has rewritten the code base and has added many new features and other applications to the suite. The community itself has changed over this time and producing a single monolithic set of applications is no longer its main goal.
In place of the browser suite, development will focus on a stand-alone Mozilla Browser (based on the Mozilla Firebird project, formerly called "Project Phoenix") and a Mozilla Mail application (based on the Thunderbird project, formerly called "Project Minotaur"). Both of these applications represent a second generation of Mozilla application development. For a short period, the first generation application suite will be worked on in parallel with these new applications, but development will switch focus to Mozilla Browser and Mozilla Mail once it has been decided that the transition to the new projects has been completed.
I have used three browsers over the last few days, Mozilla 1.4, Mozilla 1.5a and Mozilla Firebird 0.6. While the first two consist of the same components and imho only differ a little in their rendering and some obscure features, Firebird is promoted as a faster and more user-friendly browser. I found the opposite to be true... while the default setup of Firebird might be a little more speedy (although next to not noticable for me), it still lacks some features from Mozilla I definitely would miss, if Mozilla was abandoned by the developers right now. Having been a Netscape promotee for some years, afterwards an IE-only user for even more years, I have come to love Mozilla in an astonishing short time (I made it my default browser a few hours after a reluctant "let's give it a try"-kind of installation). Firebird offers way to few options in its options (at least for power-users), and several useful options such as "Close other tabs" were removed from the tab-pane context menu, maybe to make the software more appealing to first-time users. I just hope those features will be incorporated into Firebird (maybe as "Advanced" features which can be enabled as needed), before they make the switch.
Posted by XanaduFirebird is much faster than mozilla on limited memory systems or terminal servers with many users. It also has a very powerful XUL (pronounced zool) capability which means that simple xpi extensions can be writen to add pretty good functionality. Here are some plugins:- Google Toolbar , Yahoo Toolbar , rss readers , another one , and quite good skins incl LUNA winxp ie6 skin.
Posted by amioneThere's a free plugin for IE which adds most of the advantages of Mozilla/Firebird to IE ! Heard that it has been funded by M$.
